Section Description

This course introduces students to the craft of historical research, including asking good questions, collecting data from primary and secondary sources, shaping new, research-based narratives, and conducting dialogues with other scholars and researchers. We will analyze and practice these methodologies by focusing on the historical field of witchcraft in the late medieval through the modern period, both in Europe and in the Americas. The class will culminate with a historiographic essay on a sub-field of witchcraft history. Although this methods course is taught using examples from the historiography of witchcraft and witch hunts, the majority of this course will focus on materials that were not covered in Hist. 2300 (the History of Witchcraft with Prof. Senecal), so students make take both classes without repeating too much content. Pre/co-requisites: Minimum Sophomore Standing; three hours of History; HST majors only. Concentration: None - Required for History Majors
