Explores the fundamentals of music studio recording production. Topics include recording hardware, ProTools software, microphone technique, signal processing, and post production engineering. Prerequisites: MU 1770 or Instructor permission.

Section Description

This course will give students information about the music production process in a modern recording studio. This will include signal flow, microphones and techniques, equalizers and compressors, mixing and the overall production of music. It will give students a chance to learn about and use the UVM recording studios and learn how they may integrate with other studios in terms of set-up and functionality. It will cover general studio management. There will be weekly lectures and demonstrations of techniques in the studio. There will also be class projects and individual recording, editing and mixing assignments.

Section Expectation

Student should have a personal external hard-drive to store data for individual projects. Data should be secured in at least two locations. The computers and drives in the UVM studios are not secure places for student data. Homework, Projects, Quiz, Final Exam and Out of Class Preparation: Readings and written assignments may be issued occasionally and collected in class on the following week. There will be recording, editing and mixing assignments, a mid-term quiz and a final exam. Each student will be assigned 2-hours per week of individual studio time in one of the recording studios in which to complete recording and mixing assignments. Attendance and class participation are mandatory. Each student is expected to contribute with questions/discussions during class, engineer class projects and play instruments/sing on projects if possible. Participation is an essential element of a small seminar - please be present, alert and engaged in class.

Evaluation

25% In-class participation 40% Assignments 15% Mid-term quiz 20% Final exam No make-up quiz or exam will be given without documented emergency. Extra work such as additional assignments cannot be used to substitute for a missed exam or to help improve a grade. To succeed in this course you must be present, both in body and mind.
