About ASCI 2480 A

After an introduction to equine anatomy and physiology, students are presented with common diseases and their corresponding description, cause, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention. Weekly small-group case studies highlight core principles. Optional hands-on opportunities at UVM Horse Barn. Prerequisite: ASCI 1000 or ASCI 1400.

Section Description

After an introduction to equine anatomical systems and terms, students learn preventative medicine practices, as well as common equine diseases and their corresponding description, cause, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention. Weekly small-group case studies highlight core principles. This course will meet in-person/live on FRIDAYS, 9:40-11:10am.

Section Expectation

Course Learning Objectives 1. Detail components of preventative medicine; understand how we incorporate vaccines, deworming, examinations, etc. into a horse’s yearly care. 2. Explain a comprehensive equine physical examination and report/record findings appropriately. 3. Provide information on available diagnostic techniques and be able to choose which technique(s) to use at the appropriate time. 4. Describe and differentiate common equine diseases based on the disease’s cause, transmission, incubation, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention. 5. Engage with peers in small group case discussions by creating a problem list and differential diagnosis, and then prioritizing diagnostic testing and treatment options. In small groups, track and record case progress using the SOAP format. Submit individual SOAPs after each case to gain experience with this common component of a veterinary medical record.

Grading for ASCI 2480 Horse Health and Disease SOAPs 30% 10 SOAPs, 3% each Quizzes 60% 12 quizzes, 5% each Yellowdig 10% TOTAL 100%
