Animal Science: Horse Barn Cooperative

Develops skills in the practical aspects of equine management of individual horses and horses maintained in a group setting using hands-on experiences and peer teaching. Students care for their own horse or an Animal Science horse. Prerequisites: For students currently accepted into the UVM Horse Barn Cooperative Program or currently enrolled in ASCI 2400; Instructor permission.

Horse Barn Coop is for students / faculty who have been accepted into the UVM Horse Barn with their personally owned / leased horses. Meeting is held weekly to coordinate schedules, review updates, and to check in about the day to day operations of the barn. In addition to meeting, class is held every other week, to learn about horse management related topics. The mission of the course is to develop skills in the practical aspects of equine management as pertaining to individual horses and horses maintained in a group setting using hands-on experiences and peer teaching.

Horse owners are expected to care for their horse daily, complete 3 hours of horse watch during the week, cover weekend chores 3-4 times per semester, work 7 vacation days throughout the year, assist with unloading and storing hay, assist with the fall and spring events, and complete additional biweekly chores. For class, students are expected to attend weekly, and complete 2 presentation assignments.

Students' oral presentations are evaluated using a rubric. The remainder of the overall grade is based on participation in the spring event, attendance, participation, and overall attitude in the barn.
