Section Description
This introductory class explores a broad range of topics pertaining to visual communication. Images have always been used to entertain, inform, educate and persuade. Today, with the widespread adoption of digital imagery, we are inundated with more images than ever before. Yet we often remain naïve about how images influence, and the ways in which images are culturally bound. Visual literacy has been defined as the ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate visual messages. In this course, we examine how we process visual information in various environments, and how visuals are used in messaging. We’ll explore visual communication represented in illustration, photography, film and television, multimedia and social media. In the process, we will examine how social and political practices are embedded in narrative.
