Parks, Recreation and Tourism: Resort Mgmt & Marketing

Study of the management of year-round resort facilities. Emphasis on resort marketing, internal support functions, and associated recreational facilities. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

Resort Marketing and Management focuses on marketing in the service sector of the broad tourism and hospitality industry, most notably marketing resorts (the lodging sector of the tourism industry). The class also integrates operational and managerial aspects of resorts. Through class sessions, guest speakers, and field trips (3), students gain a broad knowledge of marketing and management in the hospitality business.

Students are expected to attend class, contribute to class discussion, and complete a comprehensive Marketing Portfolio. The Portfolio consists of selected important aspects of the marketing process and is created over the course of the semester, with a final portfolio due at the end of the term. There is a term project that consists of field work of an additional ~24 hours per student. Student time into the class is estimated at 4 - 8 hours each week, outside of class and the term project. The text for the class is a comprehensive custom text, which will be posted on BrightSpace at the beginning of the term.

Grades are generally an even mix of attendance and participation, the multi-component assignment package, the term project, a midterm exam, and the final Portfolio.
