About CHEM 4580 A
Stereochemistry, conformational analysis, stereoelectronic effects, transition state theory, molecular orbital theory, and reactivity criteria are discussed in regards to reaction mechanisms and functional group manipulations. Credit not awarded for both CHEM 4580 and CHEM 5580. Prerequisite: CHEM 2585.
Notes
Prereqs enforced by the system: CHEM 2585 Colocated with CHEM 5580; Total combined enrollment = 20 PACE students by permission and override
Section Description
In Chem 4580 students will take a deeper dive into stereochemistry, conformational analysis and mechanistic principles as tools to understand organic reactivity and stereoselectivity of organic reactions. Topics covered include stereoselective alkylations alpha- to nucleophilic carbon, reactions of nucleophilic carbons with carbonyl compounds including Zimmerman-Traxler model for syn/anti selectivity of aldol additions, Felkin-Ahn-Eisentein model for stereoselective additions to aldehydes and Ketones, Claisen and Dieckman condensations, the Wittig reaction along with the Horner, Wadsworth-Emmons and Still-Gennari modifications, Sulfur ylides, Mannich and Michael addition reactions. In addition concerted reactions (electrocyclizations, cycloadditions and sigmatropic rearrangements) will be thoroughly investigated along with the predictive models proposed by Woodward and Hoffman.
Section Expectation
Students should expect 5-6 hours per week in consistent studying and problem solving
