Section Description

COURSE OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the sociological analysis of race and ethnicity in America. Through lectures, students will learn about (1) Sociological concepts related to power and privilege in America and (2) The history of race and racism in the US (with a comparison with race relations in South Africa and Brazil toward the end of the semester). Through assigned readings and a semester-long journaling assignment, students will also learn about (3) Contemporary issues surrounding race in America, including those related to power, privilege, and systemic discrimination in American institutions and social systems. The topical outline of the course is: I. Sociological Perspectives on Race and Ethnic Relations II. Major Race and Ethnic Groups in the United States Today III. Comparative Perspectives: South Africa and Brazil

Evaluation

There will be THREE exams (each is worth 25% of your final grade). All exams will be in multiple choice format, and exam questions will be drawn from the lectures, films, and readings. The remaining portion of your grade will come from a semester-long journaling assignment that will be worth 25% of your final grade. This assignment will allow you the opportunity to directly engage with course readings. Regular attendance, although not a formal part of your grade, is expected.
