Section Description
This course introduces topics in pharmacology including pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and physiological actions of medications used in the treatment and prevention of human diseases. For undergraduates with strong background in biology & chemistry and wish to understand the mechanisms behind current pharmaceuticals. Topics: pathologies that require treatment, drug mechanisms and side effects, drug metabolism by the body. Several faculty teach sections in their expertise. This course is a core requirement for students pursing the Pharmacology Minor. Prerequisite: Introductory courses in Biology and Chemistry, Organic Chemistry recommended
Section Expectation
Tues/Thurs 4:25-5:40pm all sessions and exams held in person. Students are encouraged to attend. Each block of material 2-4 lectures will have case-based section that uses previous lectures to apply material at a higher level. Sessions will be preceded by a closed-book readiness quiz in Brightspace taken prior to class. Students expected to engage in group work in class or remotely in breakout rooms. Contact Dr. Lounsbury if missing due to illness or other excused absence. Lecture materials in Brightspace. Use of iClicker. Text: Katzung & Trevor's pharmacology 15e 2021. Class sessions will be videorecorded using zoom for students to review. In the event a session is not recorded, a recording from the previous year's class may be posted.
Evaluation
3 multiple choice exams (60%), 6 Case Study Assignments (25%), 6 Readiness quizzes (10%), 6 Case-Based Attendance (5%)
