Section Description

Spanish 2100 is designed to integrate the knowledge attained in the beginning level. In addition to reviewing key grammar points, we will gain practice in developing comprehension strategies through the study of short literary works, film clips and media dealing with current events in the Spanish-speaking world. The primary function of these authentic texts will be to expand the awareness of the diverse identities that form part of the Hispanic World, as well as to allow a space for critical thinking in the target language.

Section Expectation

1. Compose and revise written assignments in present and past time frames with learned material while expressing personal opinions. 2. Summarize and discuss texts using critical reflection and cultural references. 3. Demonstrate an ability to comprehend and discuss social and cultural topics. 4. Indicate a comprehension of Spanish in personal and social contexts through verbal and written responses. 5. Recognize and discuss some of the major historical events and cultural aspects of the Spanish-Speaking World.

Evaluation

Grading for this course will be evenly distributed between demonstrating your ability to communicate in writing and in speaking, as well as to comprehend both written and spoken Spanish. Graded assignments include textbook exercises, weekly discussion posts in writing and video, a weekly synchronous online class, a weekly blog post, a weekly written quiz, a weekly recorded video conversation with a small group of your peers, and a final oral exam. This variety of activities ensures that you will advance in proficiency among all language skill sets (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and engage in social learning through interaction with your peers and the instructor.
