Spanish: Elementary Spanish II

Continuation of SPAN 1100. The fundamentals of Spanish grammar through composition, comprehension, pronunciation, speaking, reading, and writing in a cultural context. Classes are conducted in Spanish and students engage in active use of the language. Credit not awarded for SPAN 1200 following receipt of credit for any SPAN course numbered SPAN 2100 or above. Prerequisite: SPAN 1100 or equivalent.

SPAN 1200 is a 4-credit second course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for students who have successfully completed SPAN 1100 at UVM, as well as students with previous experience in Spanish who have scored the requisite number of points in the language placement test. The course emphasizes speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and culture. This is an online asynchronous course, meaning that there are no required meeting days/times. All work, both oral and written, will be completed via Brightspace and the VHL Supersite. At the end of this class, students will be able to communicate in basic Spanish in a realistic and culturally appropriate manner. Students should spend about 8 hours a week preparing assignments and studying for quizzes and the final exam. SPAN 1100 fulfills the GC2 Developing Global Citizens requirement. Within three months before enrolling in a foreign language class at UVM, students need to take the online language placement test (even if they haven't studied the language) and enroll in the course level recommended.
