Section Description

This course examines American literature from the Civil War to the present, as well as introducing key terms and concepts for literary studies. We will read novels, short stories, creative nonfiction, poetry, drama, memoirs, and graphic narratives representing a diverse range of American experiences. As a seminar, this course is discussion-based, but it will include mini-lectures on subjects such as American literary history, genres and movements, and the changing literary canon. Authors include Whitman, Hurston, Cather, London, James, Wharton, Chesnutt, Eliot, Hughes, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Baldwin, Kingston, Morrison, Anzaldúa, Spiegelman, and Rankine.

Evaluation

One essay (5-7 pages), 20 short reading responses, two exams, and active participation in class discussions.
