Section Description
Deep water aerobics (DWA) is a water-based exercise that uses equipment (e.g., flotation belt, pool dumbbells, etc.) to do a variety of aerobic, strength-building, and stretching exercises while suspended in the deep end of the pool! DWA is fun for all fitness levels and is completely non-weight bearing, which means it’s gentler on your body while remaining extremely beneficial to it - a low-impact, full body workout! This course is open to anyone who is comfortable in the deep water (with the aid of a flotation belt and adaptations for shallow water if needed). In this course we will go over all the basic moves, learning a fun routine that you can then do on your own. Sessions will focus on learning moves and expanding techniques, learning how to adjust and listen to your own body, while also having fun in the water, relieving stress, and building up endurance.
Section Expectation
Students will learn a variety of deep-water aerobics techniques and proper use of equipment, resulting in the ability to demonstrate basic deep water aerobics exercises and stretches. By the end of the course, students will be able to put together their own routine using the skills we have learned, adapting it to their preferences, for a lifetime of enjoyment! This class is designed to be interactive in nature, so participation and attendance is critical. Class instruction includes demonstration and learning by doing. Students are also encouraged to explore areas of interest outside of class that are related to their learning. The pool is open outside of class time during open recreation time, so students are encouraged to come on their own and practice what they have learned in class.
Evaluation
Since PEAC classes are based on physical activity and skill development, participation is crucial to the learning process. Participation includes active presence, effort and improvement, rather than physical facility. Students must show up to class and be ready to partake in all class exercises. Students must attend 80% of classes to receive a passing grade, therefore students must not miss more than 6 classes. Class grades are based on attendance/participation (80%), demonstration of techniques (10%), and a group challenge at the end of the course (10%).
