Section Description
The United States is a nation rich in linguistic diversity. From the indigenous languages of Native Americans, to regional dialects that distinguish geographic areas, to social patterning of language with regard to race, ethnicity, gender, and social class, this course surveys the language patterns of various cultural groups throughout the country. You will learn how language is used to reflect identity and build community, but also how it is used to reinforce social hierarchies and contribute to the oppression of historically marginalized groups. You will learn key concepts in linguistics to tackle important topics like language in education, code-switching, language shift among immigrant groups, and the debate over an official language. We will examine the myth of the standard language, and discover how language ideologies can perpetuate discrimination and structural inequities, with a focus on changes to promote social justice. Through lively discussions, critical reading, and engaging case studies, this course offers a comprehensive look at the role of language in our social world.
Evaluation
Evaluation includes three exams, regular online reading quizzes, attendance and in-class participation, and final project for which students will create an audiovisual presentation to be submitted on Brightspace. Topic ideas are provided; students are able to craft the project around their own interests.
