Section Description

Deep water aerobics (DWA) is a water-based exercise that uses equipment (e.g., flotation belt, pool dumbbells, etc.) to do a variety of aerobic, strength-building, and stretching exercises while suspended in the deep end of the pool! DWA is fun for all fitness levels and is completely non-weight bearing, which means it’s gentler on your body while remaining extremely beneficial to it - a low-impact, full body workout! This course is open to anyone who is comfortable in the deep water (with the aid of a flotation belt and adaptations for shallow water if needed). In this course we will go over all the basic moves, learning a fun routine that you can then do on your own. Sessions will focus on learning moves and expanding techniques, learning how to adjust and listen to your own body, while also having fun in the water, relieving stress, and building up endurance.

Section Expectation

• Students will learn a variety of deep-water aerobics techniques and proper use of equipment. • Students will be able to demonstrate basic deep water aerobics exercises and stretches. • Students will be able to put together their own routine using the skills we have learned, adapting it to their preferences, for a lifetime of enjoyment!

Evaluation

Methods of Evaluation & Course Requirements: Attendance & Participation Since PEAC classes are based on physical activity and skill development, participation is crucial to the learning process. Participation includes active presence, effort and improvement, rather than physical facility. Students must show up to class and be ready to partake in all class exercises. Students must attend 80% of classes to receive a passing grade, therefore students must not miss more than 6 classes. Failure to attend at least 80% of classes will result in a failing grade. Students are expected to arrive on time; three (3) late arrivals will count as one (1) absence. It is the instructor’s discretion to determine whether an absence shall be deemed excused or unexcused. Excused absences are defined as absences with prior notice given to the instructor. You must contact the instructor personally and notify them of the reason for your absence. Messages do not serve as notification. Examples of absences that are unexcused regardless of prior notification include meetings, work, and/or friends or relatives in town. Examples of excused absences with prior notification include death in family and/ or severe illness. Students may be asked to provide verification. For learning deep water aerobics, attendance and participation is the most important. Through attending class, students will learn basic use of all the equipment, basic skills and movements, and stretching techniques used in the deep water. This will be worth 80% of the grade. Skills & Knowledge Assessment Random technique demo – 10% Throughout the course students may be called upon to demonstrate moves or use of equipment to show understanding of the course material. Group challenge – 10% At the second to last class, the instructor (Sophie) will not lead the class but participate! It will be up to the students, as a group, to guide themselves through a series of exercises and stretches to make up their own class! This will prepare students for using all that they’ve learned to create their own exercise routines and habits and gain confidence in the water! (Don’t worry - the instructor will be there throughout the whole thing and will aid as needed, but it is a great chance to test what everyone remembers and have fun putting together a routine!).
