Section Description

In this class we will be following the 2024 Election in progress. We’ll be reading journalistic accounts of the election and tying the events of 2024 to what Political Scientists know about elections. Subjects will include, among other things, the financing of elections, primary elections, voter behavior, media coverage of elections, the Electoral College, key issues in the contests, the role of political parties, the contest for the presidency, the contest to control the US Congress, and contests to control state governments.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to engage in the material to develop an understanding of the 2024 Election, its role and importance in U.S. democracy, and the same for U.S. elections more generally.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on their engagement with the material as reflected in their participation in class discussions, in-class written exercises, and a class research project.
