Section Description
This is a class open to anyone interested in movement and improvisation as a practice towards artistic expression and creativity. The course will serve as a laboratory for movement, experimentation, performance, and inquiry, focusing on practical and expanded approaches to the body, that open new possibilities for embodiment. Focusing on the body will build strength, courage, malleability, fluidity, awareness, and more. The class will help students develop physical strategies that excavate the elements of space, time, composition, and performance. Students will progress from harnessing individual improvisational skills to creating solo, duo, trio, and group improvisational presentations. The class aims to have students expand their ideas of improvisation and how it can be explored. It will prioritize ‘awareness’ as a life skill alongside the capacity for physical communication and cohesion in group collaboration. Additionally, we will also investigate how to relate to alternative contexts through site/environmental work and explore other forms of improvisation, such as environment, sound, language, music, and more.
Section Expectation
This course is entirely studio-based, with emphasis on practice, discourse, weekly readings and writings, and frequent online and live performance viewings.
