Section Description

Course description: A study of Italian attitudes towards diversity (in love, physical, religious, and cultural) as depicted in short stories from the 19th to the 21th century. Emphasis on reading and discussions. This course focuses on the most representative authors of short stories in the modern Italian tradition in a broader cultural, political, and social context. It consists of reading and analysis (in the form of class discussions and short reaction papers) of selected short stories examined, in some cases, against the corresponding movie adaptations. Course objectives: By the end of this course, you will be able to: - Identify a literary text’s main themes and make reasonable assertions about their meaning; - Re-narrate the plot of a literary text, orally and in writing; - Recognize and interpret literary images and symbols to infer their relationship to the main themes of the text; - Write an analytical essay on previously discussed literary texts and their authors. - Demonstrate an improved command of target-language grammar and syntax. And you have acquired the awareness of exclusion vs inclusion dynamics implemented by mainstream Italian society against, or in favor of, groups historically marginalized for reasons of race, ethnicity, disability, gender identities, sexualities. Grading Policy: Class participation 15% Presentation. 10% 3 Homework assignments 30% 3 Essays (=saggi) 45% (draft 30%; final 70%)
