Section Description
The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the sociological analysis of social problems as they occur around the globe. We will study topics such as, one per week: sociology and the study of social problems; problems of health; drugs; crime; family problems; economic inequality; work and unemployment; problems in education; problems related to race, ethnicity, and immigration; gender inequality; sexual orientation; population growth and aging; environment; technology; conflict, war, and terrorism. Required reading: Linda A. Mooney/Molly Clever/Marieke Van Willigen. MindTap for Understanding Social Problems | Latest Edition | Instant Access Purchase via the Brightspace space for this course. There is no paperback version that students can or are allowed to use. Only the Mindtap version of the textbook includes the required quizzes and supplemental materials. One week before classes start students will be emailed with a link for the purchase of this material.
Section Expectation
Students are expected to spend approximately 3 times the time spent in class on studying outside of class. Therefore, 150 minutes of class per week = 450 minutes of study outside of class.
Evaluation
A syllabus will be sent to all registered students one week before classes begin. Evaluation includes objective exams and weekly online quizzes.
