Prepares students to teach English Language Arts (ELA) to young adolescents. Covers teaching strategies related to traditional literacies such as reading, writing, and vocabulary. Develops knowledge and skills related to critically evaluating literacy models and strategies, and using literacy to build learners' critical consciousness.

Section Description

This course is designed to prepare you to teach English Language Arts (ELA) to young adolescents in equitable and culturally sustaining ways. In addition to learning teaching strategies related to traditional literacies such as reading, writing, and vocabulary, throughout this course you will expand your understanding of what literacy is and what it means to be literate in today’s world, including interrogating the ways that power & privilege play a role in defining who is literate. In addition you will gain knowledge and skills related to critically evaluating literacy models and strategies and using literacy to build your learners’ critical consciousness. This course is designed for graduate students and in-service practitioners who are interested in or currently work with students in grades 5-9.

Section Expectation

This is largely an in-person course with a mix of online sessions.

Evaluation

This course is proficiency-based and as such, will include multiple opportunities to revise work and demonstrate learning progress without penalty. Proficiency-based feedback will be provided on all assignments.
