Students will investigate the multi-faceted concepts of identity, racism, and the dynamics of power, privilege, and oppression in the United States.

Section Description

The course will expose students to race and racism at the University of Vermont the State of Vermont and the broader United States. In addition to the lectures and readings students will hear experts on the topic speak at UVM and other places in the USA e.g. Angela Davis, Ibram x Kendi, Tim Wise and others. There will also be assigned readings on examples of racial tension, discrimination policing and mass incarceration.

Section Expectation

Students will come to class prepared to participate in the discussions reflect on the videos and contribute individual perspectives on race and Racism in the United States. Students will also do independent and group presentations and attend public lectures on/off campus.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on: attendance/participation, reflection papers, group presentations.
