English: Written Expression

A foundational composition course featuring a sequence of writing, reading, and information literacy assignments. Students learn to write and revise for different rhetorical situations while increasing their mastery of academic conventions. Some sections designed for specific student audiences.

Non CAS first time first year students only until August 1st then non CAS sophomores may also enroll Open to degree and PACE students

In this course, you will practice the skills and habits of mind to craft written expression for a variety of audiences. With an enduring focus on process, you will be introduced to strategies for inventing and organizing your ideas. You’ll embark on independent scholarly research, driven by your own burning questions, and, through opportunities for frequent and substantial revision, you will learn to write and revise with increasing attention to the effects of your rhetorical choices. Writing assignments range from creative non-fiction to specialist research essays to magazine-style feature articles.

Attendance & Classroom Expectations:   This is a workshop class and therefore your presence is mandatory so that you can engage in writing activities and give and receive peer feedback. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to email a classmate and find out what you missed and make up what you can. Do not email me if you’re going to be absent. All in class work will be posted to our Brightspace class page. If you would like to discuss missed work, come to my office hours. You will be allowed to miss one class per portfolio without penalty. A pattern of absences or frequent tardiness will impact your grade because you will not be present to particulate.

You will be graded on four portfolios: a social narrative, annotated bibliography, literature review, and magazine article. Each portfolio will include multiple drafts, writing exercises, evidence of your writing process, and a letter reflecting on your writing process.
