Introduction to the basic techniques, concepts, and skills of theatrical design. Through analysis, research, writing, and design assignments, students will gain a deeper understanding of how designers contribute to the success of a performance and learn more about communication and collaboration within a creative team.

Section Description

This course is an introduction to the basic techniques, concepts, and skills of theatrical design. Through analysis, research, written, and design assignments, students will learn to communicate their vision of a play to members of a creative team and gain a deeper understanding of how a creative team of designers can contribute to the success of a performance. Focus will be placed on: • The elements of design and how they apply to all the design areas. • Script analysis for the designer. • Research and design presentation. • Basic drawing skills. • Artistic collaboration.

Section Expectation

This course is an in-person lecture that will meet twice a week. The class will also involve multiple projects and presentations of individual and collaborative work. Students should expect to spend between 6 – 8 hours on coursework outside of class, with the potential for extra time to meet with project collaborators.
