Section Description
CHIN 1100 “The First Year College Chinese I” aims to enable students to begin and/or continue to learn Mandarin Chinese with joy and efficiency. Students (a) learn to speak Chinese through Chinese rhythmic verses composed with daily expressions, (b) learn the Chinese writing system through the pictures that writing symbols developed from, and (c) learn to understand Chinese culture embedded in the Chinese language.
Section Expectation
Meet three times a week in class on MWF. Learn and practice listening, speaking, and reading online on Thursday. Do assigned homework regularly. Practice speaking in class and practice writing basic characters after class. Textbook: Essential College Chinese Book 1, published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press and Phoenix Tree Publishing Company, ISBN 9787561950296
Evaluation
Grades are based on attendance, participation, homework, quizzes, and a final exam.
