Notes

Open to Degree and PACE students

Section Description

This course introduces the students to the broad range of diversity of the world’s wildlife, why wildlife is valued, why many species of wildlife are at risk, and strategies for their conservation. We will consider both ecological issues (such as habitat fragmentation and population dynamics) and social issues (such as values and political institutions), and how knowledge about both must be integrated to achieve protection or restoration of wildlife. Guest speakers will share their expertise in particular aspects of wildlife conservation both in Vermont and further afield. Most readings are drawn from the popular literature; some scientific papers that are accessible to a general audience are also included. Class discussion of conservation issues will be required.

Section Expectation

This course is split into two parts: lecture and group work. Each week you will work in small groups to answer critical thinking questions related to lecture content and readings. By the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Explain the basic impacts of conservation threats on species, communities, habitats, and ecosystems 2. Identify knowledge systems and stakeholders involved in conservation issues and the diversity of values and beliefs they hold 3. Use their understanding of wildlife ecology, natural history, and human dimensions of wildlife to make informed recommendations related to conservation, restoration, and management 4. Effectively communicate about natural resource and conservation issues from a local, regional, and global lens

Evaluation

Your final grade will be determined by weekly quizzes, weekly discussion worksheets, a midterm and final exam, and participation.
