Section Description

EXSC 2420 (3cr) is designed to explore the psychological effects and implications of participation in sport and exercise. Emphasis and overviews of personality and behavioral dynamics of sport, the psychological changes associated with exercise, assessment in sport psychology, performance enhancement, motivation, anxiety, group processes, and psychological factors regarding sport and exercise adoption, maintenance, and enjoyment of sport and exercise will be explored. Pre requisite: PSYS 1400

Section Expectation

EXSC 2420 is designed for the student to: 1. Explore and apply information regarding psychological theories and application to sport and exercise. 2. Describe principles of personality traits, anxiety, locus of control, intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, and client/social environmental interactions as they affect client behaviors. 3. Describe the role of various mental healthcare providers that may comprise a mental health referral network. 4. Identify and describe the basic signs and symptoms of mental health disorders, personal/social conflict, that may indicate the need for referral to a mental healthcare professional. 5. Describe potential psychological referral plans for athletes and others in need of intervention and support. 6. Explain the theoretical background of psychological and emotional responses to injury and forced inactivity. 7. Understand how psychosocial considerations affect clinical decision-making related to return to activity or participation. 8. Understand and apply psychological interventions (eg, goal setting, imagery, positive self-talk, relaxation/anxiety reduction) used to support rehabilitation and facilitate a patient's physical, psychological, and return to activity needs. 9. Understand and apply psychological theories/techniques related to exercise adoption/maintenance, and exercise behavior. 10. Explore and apply contemporary research/theory on goal setting, PST, and other areas of sport/exercise performance. 11. Understand how the theoretical and applied tenets of sport & exercise psychology can be applied to the student’s career path.

Evaluation
