Section Description

A good deal of our understanding of what we might consider ‘normal’ communication vs. ‘different/disordered’ communication comes from our constant exposure to representations in the media. Does this exposure shape our perceptions if a person communicates differently from our societies expected ‘norm’? During this course, we increase our awareness and appreciation of the diversity of communication abilities. We will analyze a variety of media portrayals, have discussions with community members, and increase awareness of our own perceptions around communication differences. Together we will examine how this information promotes images that are positive and negative, and how those images influence opinions and perceptions. This class will aim to capture your interest and challenge your thinking.

Section Expectation

A large portion of your total grade will come from completion of a weekly homework assignment in the form of a journal entry. These entries may include a combination of watching a movie/portion of a movie (or other media outlet), associated reading(s), responding to prompts, interacting with your community, reflecting on personal connections, administering surveys, etc. The completion of the journal each week will provide a jumping off point for participating in classroom discussions. Participating in class discussions and activities is not only important for your own learning but also enriches the learning experience for your peers and helps foster a dynamic classroom environment. Expectations around in-class contributions include, but are not limited to, attending class regularly, preparing for discussions by reading and/or watching assigned materials, asking and responding to relevant questions, working with other students during activities, and avoiding disrupting behavior.

Evaluation

Grades are based on participation in classroom discussions, weekly homework assignments, small group project, and final group project.
