Parks, Recreation and Tourism: Int Sustainable Rec&Tourism

Introduces students to the field of sustainable recreation and tourism that is economically viable, socially inclusive, and environmentally responsible. Explores how recreation and tourism provides positive leisure experiences that contribute to individual well-being, vibrant livable communities, and healthy natural environments.

Open to Degree and PACE students

Introduction to Sustainable Recreation and Tourism introduces students to the vast field/world of Recreation and Tourism, with an emphasis on sustainability as an over-arching theme. Students will learn to apply the ethics and principles of sustainability to management and service across recreation and tourism businesses, privately and publicly owned/operated; learn how to increase inclusivity to create robust and economically successful businesses in these industries; as well as understanding the environmental impacts that recreation and tourism activities have on the natural, living, and man-made environment. Whether students have an intention of entering the exciting, rewarding, enjoyable, and job plentiful professional fields of Recreation and Tourism, or will pursue another career and be a participant in recreation and a consumer of tourism in their future lives; through class lecture and small group sessions and guest speakers, students will gain a solid broad knowledge of how the Recreation and Tourism industries function and contribute to today’s global society.

Students are expected to attend all classes (attendance is taken), contribute to class discussion, complete relevant individual assignments and one or more group projects. There will be a midterm exam and a final paper. There is no actual text for class. A series of readings relevant to the mix of topics covered in the class are assigned and posted on BrightSpace.

Grades are calculated based on a balanced mix of attendance and participation, assignments and group project(s), a midterm exam, and final paper.
