Section Description

We will explore a series of great films from the origin of cinema to the end of the classical era in 1960. The course will focus on the comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, as well as films such as Citizen Kane and Singin' in the Rain. We will watch the major genres and styles, including film noir, melodrama, and the western. There will be production assignments that allow students to work out some of the techniques that we are seeing on the screen.

Section Expectation

Come to class, watch the films, do the reading, take the quizzes and exams, do the assignments.

Evaluation

Three exams, reading quizzes, 2 production assignments.
