About CSD 1940 OL2

The Development of Spoken Language focuses on the nature of language development from infancy through early school years. It examines the developmental progression of phonology, syntax, semantics, morphology and pragmatics as well as various theoretical perspectives on language development. This course will provide a discussion of children's individual differences in acquiring language, including cultural and linguistic aspects of first and second language acquisition. The importance of family and relationships in children's acquisition of language is a recurring theme. The connections between oral language and early literacy development are examined. The topics of phonemic awareness, symbolic representation, and early reading, spelling and writing skills are discussed.
