Section Description

SPAN 1100 is the first course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for the student with little or no prior knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use their newly acquired skills to communicate in Spanish in a realistic and culturally appropriate manner. Classes will be taught in Spanish more frequently as the semester progresses. The University of Vermont respects the Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour. For every hour spent in class, you are expected to spend approximately 2 hours outside of class. Thus, in SPAN 1100, a 4-credit course, you should plan to spend about 8 hours a week outside of the classroom preparing assignments and studying. As a GC2 designated course, SPAN 1100 also fulfills the GC2 Developing Global Citizens requirement. At the conclusion of this class under this designation, students should be able to: -Demonstrate knowledge of a second language and an awareness of how language shapes culture. -Demonstrate a complex understanding of cultural differences through verbal and nonverbal communication and can use this to broaden their perspectives on diverse ways of knowing and being. -Recognize the influence of cultural norms, customs, and traditions on ways of knowing and/or being in the world and can use this understanding to inform their cross-cultural interactions. *Language Placement Exam: Within three months prior to enrolling in your first language class at UVM, you need to take the online placement test (even if you haven't studied the language) and enroll in the course level recommended. If you enroll in a class without taking the test, or enroll in a class below your recommended level, the system will disenroll you from the course. You can find the placement test at: go.uvm.edu/flp COURSE OBJECTIVES • Acquire vocabulary related to basic conversations, university/family life, hobbies, travel, shopping, and daily routines. • Develop an understanding of how to correctly pronounce words. • Identify question words and respond to basic questions that are foundational for conversations. • Speak and write about current activities using the present tense. • Begin to speak and write about past activities using the preterite tense. • Express likes and dislikes. • Listen to and understand basic conversations. • Read short, simple texts. • Gain broader cultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking communities and countries.
