Intensive course in a broad disciplinary area (humanities, social sciences, arts, or natural sciences). Part of an integrated first-year experience in which students take 2-4 classes exploring aesthetic, humanistic, social, linguistic, environmental, or scientific issues. May repeat for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Co-requisite: Enrollment in the appropriate Liberal Arts Scholars Program.

Section Description
Rhetoric of Rap is an engaging and thought-provoking course offered by the Speech Program under the English Department. Designed to explore the rich artistic and cultural landscape of rap music, this course delves deep into the genre's lyrical and rhetorical elements. By critically analyzing rap songs from various eras and artists, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the social, political, and cultural contexts in which this form of expression thrives. Throughout the semester, students will examine the intricate relationship between language, music, and social commentary in rap music. They will explore themes such as identity, race, gender, power dynamics, social justice, and more. The course will equip students with the necessary skills to recognize and interpret the persuasive techniques employed by rap artists, including wordplay, metaphors, storytelling, and rhythmic patterns. The curriculum incorporates a variety of learning approaches, including lectures, group discussions, hands-on activities, guest lectures and events. Students will engage in close textual analysis, dissecting rap lyrics line by line and decoding the underlying rhetorical devices and themes. They will also examine the cultural significance of rap music through studying its historical development, major influencers, and connection to broader artistic movements. The course will encourage students to critically reflect on the social implications of rap music and its impact on contemporary society.
