Section Description

Why have many governments instituted extensive surveillance of their citizens? Why do soldiers slaughter unarmed civilians? Why and how did atrocities and genocides such as the Holocaust happen? - In this course we will address these and similar questions. In so doing, we will identify, analyze, and explain different forms of deviance, as violation of social norms, and how society responds to it by marginalizing, or “othering,” deviant individuals and groups (social control). The focus is on different theoretical approaches to deviance and social control, empirical patterns of deviant behaviors, and temporal, spatial, and cultural variations in these patterns. Topics may include classic experiments in social psychology (Milgram, Stanford Prison), the disclosures by Edward Snowden and government surveillance by the NSA and in China, torture at Abu Ghraib, the killing of civilians at My Lai, the Holocaust, as well as specialized subjects such as sex work, pornography, boundaries of sexual identity, criminal behavior, and disability as deviance. Note that some of the above involve graphic materials that may disturb some students and include behaviors and historical events that some may consider "extreme" (a characteristic generally associated with some forms of deviance) The textbook is the most recent edition of Erich Goode, Deviant Behavior (Routledge).
