Section Description

In Math 3517 we will study properties of integers, more particularly congruences, prime numbers, quadratic reciprocity, and time allowing continued fraction expansions. The class is aimed at students with no or limited knowledge of abstract algebra. The goals for this class are: To solidify your conception of mathematics as a language and a way to make sense of and solve problems; For you to become proficient in proof writing using several common proof techniques such as proof by induction and contradiction; To help you become confident in your ability to learn mathematics from a book; To teach you some cool facts about integers and for you to become comfortable with some number-theoretic algorithms.

Section Expectation

Class time will be spent lecturing. The required textbook for the class is Elementary Number Theory, Second Edition, by Underwood Dudley. ISBN-13: 978-0-486-46931-7. Suggested retail price is $14.95.

Evaluation

Every week you will be offered a variety of assignments to complete to show proficiency in the material covered that week. These will include a pre-quiz, computational homework, proof-based homework, writing true/false questions, participation on Yellowdig, etc. There will not be exams.
