Section Description
This creative nonfiction workshop focuses on the art of writing about illness and the body. We’ll read creative nonfiction pieces around themes like mental illness; storytelling as health; empathy in healthcare spaces; as well as the intersections of race and health, gender and health, and sexuality and health. Then we’ll write our own creative essays that connect in some way to one or more of these themes. These pieces will draw on our personal memories and experiences, and may also include research that helps us further explore the intellectual and/or emotional heart of the matter. The creative writers we’ll be modeling on include Sarah Manguso, Esmé Weijun Wang, and Terese Marie Mailhot (Seabird Island Band). Our class will focus on process, meaning you will experiment with writing and revision techniques to learn more about how you develop your best creative writing. Books: The Two Kinds of Decay: A Memoir by Sarah Manguso; The Collected Schizophrenias by Esmé Weijun Wang; Heart Berries: A Memoir by Terese Marie Mailhot (Seabird Island Band); shorter texts will be provided by instructor
Section Expectation
Active participation during in-class discussions and peer-review workshops; homework assignments including short readings, responses to readings, workshop letters, and creative writing activities. Our formal workshop sessions will allow you to receive feedback on your creative pieces and ask us questions. The final portfolio will include revisions of the two formal workshop pieces, as well as a reflection on your writing process.
Evaluation
Participation 25%; Essays and essay revisions 50%; Final Portfolio 25%
