Section Description

This course is designed for students seeking to be part of a learning community exploring education for sustainability (EFS), systems thinking, and school transformation. In collaboration with experts in the field of education, systems-thinking, and leadership, we will support students in developing a peer network committed to ecological integrity, economic vitality, and social justice. We will engage participants in new ways of thinking, in developing the skills needed to create change and nurture themselves, and present innovative ideas and strategies to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the future. Students will also become teacher-researchers, as they use inquiry and action research frameworks to investigate a personally meaningful question about their EFS practice.

Section Expectation

It is expected that students will have a strong foundation in EFS or teaching/leading with the interconnections of social, environmental, and economic systems in mind. Students are also expected to have experience in pedagogical approaches that support understanding of sustainability. Building from this base we will explore systems-thinking, leadership skills, and change-making in order to transform education.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on class participation, an EFS action research project, applied systems-thinking modeling, and a series of reflection papers.
