Section Description
Diversity in CEMS: under-representation, environmental justice, gender/race participation, ethical considerations, equal opportunity, Title VII. Landscape of race/gender in STEM.
Section Expectation
The course is structured so that we will first explore diversity in general (1 below), then we will examine how diversity issues may come up in our professions (2 below) and we will conclude by discussing ethics in our professions. 1. Diversity in US culture, including: • Self-reflection regarding one’s own prejudices • The meaning of power and privilege • The history, importance and impact of diversity and multiculturalism • Communication in a multicultural environment • Racism, sexism, classism and ageism 2. Diversity in our professions • Federal labor laws and the impact on the organization • Understanding diversity issues in the workplace • Improving diversity in technical professions 3. Ethics in our professions
Evaluation
You will be evaluated based on your attendance, participation in discussions and class related activities, homework, a course journal, outside of the classroom diversity experiences and an instructor and peer-reviewed final group presentation. Grades will be calculated on a 100-point scale and will be comprised of the following: 10 points Class attendance 10 points Class preparation and active participation 20 points Homework assignments (10 total) 15 points Course journal 15 points Multicultural experience 30 points Final project
