Section Description

Through the analysis of historical and fictional infectious disease outbreaks, this course will explore factors which encourage and discourage the emergence of infectious disease, including the impact of demographics and human behaviors, trade/travel, advancements in science and technology, ecological change, and public health. The class will also look at examples of how disease has influenced human history, focusing on the impact of disease on the rise and fall of civilizations.

Section Expectation

This course is online and incorporates active learning methods. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week reviewing the course materials and completing assignments. There is no text book, but students will be reading 3 novels about historical disease outbreaks throughout the semester.

Evaluation

Grades are based on weekly assignments and discussion posts.
