Health: Cultural Health Care

Examines the principles and theories of culture in health care with an overall goal to understand how health care is contextualized by and through culture.

This on-line course will examine the principles and theories of culture in health and illness care. The student will study various cultures that are found in American society. Issues such as historical origins, racism, and life experiences surrounding cultural health care will be addressed. The overall goal is to have students understand how health care is contextualized by and through culture.

Objectives On completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. Investigate the historical underpinnings of cultural health care in American society 2. Discuss their own ethnocentrism in relation to the provision of culturally sensitive health care 3. Examine social/political/economic influences affecting cultural health care 4. Reflect on their experiences in and out of the classroom in relation to the provision of cultural health care.

This course will use specifications grading (“specs grading”). All assignments will be graded as Pass/Fail; there will be no partial credit/grades. You decide what to do to get the grade you want; in other words, it will be your choice. The number of assignments you complete (according to listed requirements) will determine your course grade. Each assignment is fully described in the syllabus, so be sure you check the description of the Criteria for a Pass prior to submission. Incomplete assignments will receive a Fail.
