Section Description
MATH 1248 (Calculus 2, formerly MATH 022) is a continuation of the study of the calculus of functions of one variable begun in MATH 1234 (formerly MATH 021). Topics will include techniques of integration, including integration by parts, trigonometric substitution, and partial fractions; applications of integration, including arc length and surface area; parametric equations and polar coordinates; sequences and series, including analytic tests for convergence; Taylor series; and an introduction to vectors in two and three dimensions. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in technical fields such as mathematics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences. The computer algebra system Mathematica will be used throughout the course. Prerequisite: C-or better in MATH 1234 (021). Students coming from the MATH 1212/1224 (MATH 019/020) sequence without having taken MATH 1234 (MATH 021) should take MATH 1242 (MATH 023) instead of MATH 1248 (MATH 022).
Section Expectation
Required Course Materials If you took MATH 1234 (MATH 021) at UVM you already have paid for WebAssign access, so you should not need to purchase anything! If you do not already have WebAssign access from MATH 1234, then the following applies. Access Code for WebAssign Online Homework and eBook You will need an access code for the eBook and WebAssign online homework for the course. Choose one of the options described below. (If you don’t want a printed book, choose Option 1 or 2.) Option 1 WebAssign for Stewart/Clegg/Watson’s Calculus: Early Transcendentals,9th Edition, Multi-TermPrinted Access Card. ISBN 9780357128947 This provides access to the eBook and online homework for all three semesters of calculus (MATH 1234, 1248, 2248). Option 2 Cengage Unlimited, 1 term (4 months). ISBN 9780357700037 This provides access to the eBook and online homework for all three semesters of calculus, as well as unlimited access to other Cengage textbooks/online homework for one semester. Note: Your access to the calculus eBook and online homework is valid for MATH 1234, 1248, 2248 even if you only purchase one semester of Cengage Unlimited. Option 3 Stewart/Clegg/Watson’s Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Loose-leaf Version, 9th Edition+ WebAssign Multi-Term Printed Access Card. ISBN 9780357466261 This is a loose-leaf copy of the textbook, bundled with an access code for the online homework and eBook good for all three semesters of calculus. Software The Mathematica software used in the course is provided by UVM; you do not need to purchase it. You may install Mathematica on your own computer free of charge under UVM’s site license. Mathematica is also available for use in various computer labs on campus.
Evaluation
Based on weekly quizzes, online homework, Mathematica labs, 3 tests, and a final exam.
