Section Description

STAT 1410: Basic Statistical Methods - Foundational course for students taking further quantitative courses. Topics include: Exploratory Data Analysis for both Quantitative and Categorical variables, Study/Experimental Design, Probability and Probability Distributions, Estimation and Hypothesis Testing for univariate and bivariate data (including Regression Inference). Technology is introduced, used for demonstrations, and student proficiency is assessed. Assessments may include (and are not limited to) Exams, Quizzes, and Labs.

Section Expectation

Required Course Materials Text and Online Homework Access Card You will need to purchase the MyStatLab access code with or without the loose-leaf version of the text. Note that the homework access card comes with online access to the eBook, which is all that is required. The printed version of the textbook is optional. Minimum Requirement: Pearson’s MyStatLab with eBook Access Code. This includes a homework access card with online access to the eBook. This can be purchased at the bookstore or online through Bb from the publisher. If you would like a printed version of the textbook in addition to the homework access and eBook, choose the following bundle instead of the minimum requirement described above. “Intro to Stats” Looseleaf version with MyStatLab Access Code; DeVeaux, Velleman, and Bock; Pearson (5th Edition). This includes a homework access card with online access to the eBook, plus a looseleaf textbook. Technology Technology may include JMP or R, a TI 83/84 Graphing Calculator. JMP software used in the course is provided by UVM; you do not need to purchase it. You may install JMP on your own computer free of charge under UVM’s site license. JMP is also available for use on all computers across campus (Bailey Howe Library, Living/Learning, etc). R and R Studio is a free openware download. You can have a choice to use either JMP or R, depending upon your need or desire. The TI 83/84 graphing calculator is required and will be used in class. Various statistical functions are built-in to the calculator which will be utilized in problem demonstrations and for exams. Prerequisites: Math. 1111, 1212 or 1234, sophomore standing.

Evaluation

Grading: Your grade for the course will be based on: • MyStatLab HW Quizzes (10%) • In Class Quizzes (10%) – drop the lowest 2 • JMP Labs (10%) • MyStatLab HW Reading (4%) iClicker Participation (10%) • Tests (2 at 18% each) • Final Exam (18%)
