Section Description

This course is an introduction into patient care technology - the environment, a background review of the human body and technical principles, and a specific focus on medical devices commonly found at the bedside in intensive care units. Learning Objectives (1) Provide a basic understanding of health technology life cycle, environment of care, regulations, device quality assurance, medical and technical concepts, and common patient care equipment technologies. (2) Help students better communicate with clinical and other healthcare staff involved with medical devices, administration, and equipment vendors. (3) Develop the student's interest, and prepare them for further study and more advanced application of the principles.

Section Expectation

No textbook is required for the course - all content is online. The course will utilize web-based content including text, photos, diagrams, flow charts, other figures, video, audio, links to other websites, interactive tools, and other web attributes to deliver content to students. The course is 100% online. The topics to be included for each medical technology covered in this course are: Device principles, Proper clinical application, Patient safety, Common device/technique problems and resolution, Care, maintenance, and quality assurance, and Technology management

Evaluation

Student Evaluation and Grading (1) Eleven Quizzes - each 5 points (55 points total) There will be a quiz after completion of most modules. A pre-test at the beginning of the course will help prepare the student for quizzes. (2) Two exams - each 15 points (30 points total) A midterm exam will be given covering the first half of the course. A final exam will cover the second half of the course. (3) Three discussion questions and responses - each 5 points (15 points total) Discussion questions relevant to the current topic will be presented. Students will provide an answer to the question according to the requirements and also must respond with a constructive response to another student's answer. NOTE: Generally, each question will be due on Fridays and the response to another student, completing the assignment, will be due on Sundays. The highest grade for the assignment will only be achieved if the student makes an original post/answer to the discussion question, includes a reference* not part of the course content, links or announcements, comments constructively on another student’s post, and also responds to other student’s comments on his/her original post. An optional Extra Credit Report is also available to add up to 5 points to your grade. Final Grades The letter grade shown corresponds to the final numeric grade which will be shown in My Grades.
