Section Description

Analysis and design of solid and glue-laminated timber members and structural systems including tension members, beams, columns, beam-columns, diaphragms, shear walls, and connections; LRFD and ASD design methods; application of IBC for timber 1. Analyze and design timber structural members and various timber structural systems. 2. Identify and define design loads according to building codes applicable to wood framed structural systems. 3. Describe the inherent nature of solid lumber, its physical and structural characteristics together with other wood products such as glued laminated timber and plywood. 4. Analyze and design tension members, beams, columns, beam-columns, diaphragms, shear walls and connections (using nails and bolts) using both Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) methods. 5. Review and discuss the current developments in structural wood design and construction techniques by exploring real-world timber structures (term paper). TENTATIVE SYLLABUS 1.0 Wood Buildings and Design Criteria - Introduction to types of wood structures and structural systems - Building codes and design criteria - ASD and LRFD 2.0 Design Loads - Dead loads, live loads, snow loads, rain loads and other loads - Wind loads and seismic loads - Load combinations - Serviceability and deflection 3.0 Behavior of Structures Under Loads and Forces - Structures subject to vertical forces - Structures subject to lateral forces (Lateral Force Resisting Systems) - Diaphragms and shear walls in LFRS 4.0 Properties of wood and Lumber Grades - Structural lumber grades and grade stamps - Properties of wood, cellular makeup, moisture content and growth characteristics - Size categories and commercial grades - Different strength adjustment factors 5.0 Structural Glued Laminated Timber - Sizes of glulam members - Fabrication and grades of glulam - Adjustment factors for glulam 6.0 Beam Design - Bending - Lateral stability - Adjustment factors - Shear - Deflection - Design problems- solid and glulam beams, roof and floor decking 7.0 Axial Forces and Combined Bending and Axial Forces - Axial Tension - Columns and slenderness ratio - Combined bending and tension - Combined bending and compression - Design problems 8.0 Wood Structural Panels - Panel dimensions, plywood makeup, veneer grades and plywood grades - Roof sheathing and floor sheathing - Wall sheathing and siding - Design problems 9.0 Diaphragms - Diaphragm action - Chords - Collectors - Interior shear walls - Diaphragm deflection and flexibility - Design problems 10.0 Shearwalls - Shearwall action - Design problems 11.0 Wood Connections - Types of fasteners and connections - Nails and staples - Bolts, lag bolts and other connections - Design problems

Section Expectation

This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the semester-long project and the term paper. EXAM AND HOMEWORK POLICIES: Make-up exams will be given at the discretion of the instructor, and appropriate documentation of absence will be required for consideration of a make-up exam. It is strongly encouraged to obtain prior permission from the instructor. Homework assignments will be assigned weekly and will be posted on the class website. No late homework will be accepted without a valid reason and there will be no make-up RATs.
