Spanish: Elementary Spanish I

The fundamentals of Spanish grammar through composition, comprehension, pronunciation, speaking, reading, and writing in a cultural context. Classes are conducted in Spanish and students engage in active use of the language. No prior knowledge expected. Cannot be taken for credit after SPAN 1200.

**Students must take the Spanish placement exam before registering for this course.¨Note that if you enroll in a class without taking the test, or enroll in a class below your recommended level, the system will disenroll you from the course (you will receive an email notification if this occurs). SPAN 1100 is the first course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for the student with little or no prior knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use their newly acquired skills in order to communicate in Spanish in a realistic and culturally appropriate manner. All classes will be taught in Spanish. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of SPAN 1100, the student: • will be able to exchange greetings, to give his/her identity, and name a number of familiar objects from the immediate environment. • will be able to supply limited information on familiar topics, fill out simple forms and documents, and provide basic biographical information. • will be able to engage in the reading of short, simple texts. • will judge intelligently the quality of the available resources for learning Spanish. • will be sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences. •will have broadened his/her general cultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking communities and countries of the world today.

The University of Vermont respects the Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour: for every hour spent in a classroom, a student is expected to complete approximately 2 hours of coursework outside of it. Thus, in SPAN 1100, a 4-credit course, a student should expect to work at least 8 hours a week outside of the classroom. Grades are based on attendance and participation, weekly assignments, written exams, an oral exam, and final exam.
