What good is a social media marketing campaign without a solid strategy to guide your efforts?

Justine Johnson of Menomonie, Wisconsin, was looking to refine her social media strategy skills when she came across UVM’s Advanced Social Media Marketing course. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse alumna worked in social media marketing for Bassett Healthcare Network in New York State before she relocated to her home state last year with plans to open her own social media consulting company.  But first she wanted to take her social media skills to the next level.

She chose the four-week, online UVM course, which offers an intensive study of social media through the support of an experienced digital marketing instructor and video lessons from HubSpot Academy.

The course teaches participants everything from identifying your target audience on social media and setting goals to developing one-on-one relationships and measuring social media return on investment.

“The most beneficial things I found in the UVM course were learning to create a road map for clients and helping them figure out their audience, demographics, habits, customer lifetime values, as well as ROI techniques,” says Johnson, who launched Amplified Media Production, LLC, after completing the course earlier this year. Her company focuses on social media strategy for small businesses.

The UVM Advanced Social Media Marketing course teaches participants to:

  • How to develop a social media strategy
  • Build a social road map and social media content plan
  • Integrate social media with other channels like email and advertising
  • Apply social listening and monitoring for customer insight
  • Use social media to build one-to-one relationships
  • Learn the basics of social advertising
  • Measure your social media return on investment
  • Maintain continued success with social media

Johnson, a new mother, decided on UVM because of the course’s manageable 4-6 hours per week time commitment and the course is fully online.

“Comparing cost to value, I feel like I really got my money’s worth,” says Johnson. “The time frame was excellent. I could fit everything in—all of the readings, videos and discussions—all while being a mom.”

Of all of the social media channels, Instagram is Johnson’s favorite as she sees it as an effective way for her clients to grow their business.

“I like Instagram because of the potential it offers to build and grow a brand,” she says. “Instagram is where everyone is now and it’s a place where customers can really get to know a business.”
