Overview
UVM’s Outdoor Risk Management for Education & Recreation Certificate is a 4-week, fully online, cohort-based certificate for K-12 educators, camp directors, outdoor program leaders, and outfitters. Participants learn to assess, document, and improve risk management for outdoor and experiential programs, and finish with a written risk management plan for their own organization. The certificate costs $725 and is offered by the University of Vermont’s Professional and Continuing Education division (PACE).
Risk Management for Outdoor Programs is No Longer Optional
Before a trip gets approved or an insurance policy renews, someone has to explain how the program keeps people safe. Often that person is a teacher, a camp director, or a business owner who also leads the trips.
This certificate gives you a working system you can come back to each season, whether you run a school program, a summer camp, a youth program, or an outdoor adventure business. You’ll assess how your program handles risk today, then build the policies, staff training, and review process your setting needs.
What You’ll Be Able to Do
- Assess how risk is managed in your program and explain it clearly to a school board, insurer, or accrediting body.
- Write policies, staff training protocols, and incident response procedures that fit your program, including training for seasonal staff and guides.
- Review your risk practices each season using your own program data and industry standards, and update them as your program changes.
- Finish with a written risk management plan built for your program.
The educational value of outdoor programming is too great to pass up for fear of potential risks. Knowing the risks and how to mitigate and communicate about them can help you lead more, safer, high quality educational and recreational opportunities.

- K-12 teachers who lead field trips and outdoor programs
- School administrators who approve and oversee those programs
- Summer and day camp directors
- Afterschool and youth program leaders
- Owners and managers of guide services, outfitters, and rental businesses, such as paddling, climbing, and ski touring operations

Curriculum
The course moves from the program level to day-to-day operations and includes a review of your own practices. You’ll work with templates and checklists you can adapt for your own program, share your work with a cohort of other educators and program leaders, and complete your written risk management plan by the end of week four.
Whether you need youth program risk management training for a school or camp, or a working safety system for a guide service, the course is built around creating plans you can use.
Career Outcomes
Career Outlook
Risk management is part of the job in the roles that run outdoor programs.
In a review of U.S. job postings that asked for both outdoor education and risk management skills, the most-posted titles included Director of Outdoor Programs, Outdoor Educator, Outdoor Education Coordinator, and Camp Director.
A UVM certificate and a finished risk management plan give you something concrete to show when you apply for those roles or take on more responsibility in your current one.
For teachers and administrators, the plan is documentation you can bring to a school board or insurer when proposing a new trip or program.
For business owners, the plan and training protocols are documentation you can share with your insurer and use to train new guides each season.

You leave with a finished plan
The coursework uses templates and checklists you can adapt directly, and it ends with a written plan you can put to use right away.

- Download or request an official certificate or verification letter for the completed course/program.
- Submit the official UVM documentation directly to your professional organization, licensing board, or certifying body through their required process (often an online portal, application form, or mailed packet).
