Section Description

This course explores leadership and strategies for cultivating sustainable organizations. Advancing ecological, economic, and social goals simultaneously is inherently paradoxical, yet organizations that learn to hold them together can unlock remarkable opportunities for themselves and for society.

As collective endeavors, organizations can achieve goals beyond the reach of any individual person. Leaders play a central role in mobilizing people and resources toward a shared purpose. This course examines people-first approaches to sustainability, rooted in the premise that high-performance teams, unique cultures, organizational learning, and employee empowerment can accelerate innovation. We will pair this with the study of organizational strategy to understand how leaders position their organizations for sustainable outcomes.

We will explore innovative leadership approaches through the lenses of several popular books that put these ideas into practice, covering sustainable production and consumption models, sustainable business approaches, and regenerative agriculture. These books are meant to inspire you and to get you thinking about how to create, adopt, and adapt various strategies for your own work in organizations and in policy more generally.
