Section Description

This class explores the history, practice, and theory of Indigenous, feminist, and social movement media across South America. By focusing on such topics as community and pirate radio in the Andes, feminist street reporting from protests, and anti-mining investigations in the Amazon, we examine how grassroots outlets across the region provide powerful models of making media alongside movements. Students study how these media amplify community voices to create counter-hegemonic narratives for social change. The class involves readings, documentaries, podcasts, and guest speakers from Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Argentina to orient student discussions and reflections. Students learn how they can apply this knowledge into practice in their own research, careers, activism, and media making.

Section Expectation

This class is a mixture seminar discussions, lectures, group activities, media analysis, guest speakers, and writing assignments based on weekly readings, podcasts or documentaries. Each week will involve reading, writing, and discussion forum assignments outlined in weekly modules.

Evaluation

Evaluation is based on class attendance and participation, and completion of weekly writing, reading, and reflection assignments.
