Section Description

This course explores the history of Russia during the twentieth century, a turbulent period spanning multiple revolutions, two World Wars, and various episodes of mass violence. Students will examine the dramatic transformations brought by the October Revolution of 1917 and the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1922, including: an endeavor to engineer a “New Soviet person” and achieve communism; rapid industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture; attempts to manage the ethno-linguistic diversity of the world’s largest country through nationalities policy; the changing status of women; the creation (and partial dismantlement) of a massive prison-camp system; and a hard won victory in World War II, followed by global competition for hearts and minds in the Cold War and Space Race. The breakup of the USSR in 1991 ended this ambitious experiment yet left many legacies and unresolved issues in Russia and other former Soviet republics, which we will consider.
