Section Description
This class examines material cultural and oral history to reframe our understanding of the chronology, themes and debates of the Modern Civil Rights Movement. It centers the experiences of Black Americans from the Jim Crow to the Long Civil Rights Movement. While early histories of the Civil Rights Movement examined Supreme Court decisions, legislative victories, and major demonstrations from 1954 to 1968 (also known as the Classical Era), historians of the last few decades have attempted to trace the radical roots of the Civil Rights Movement back to 1930s labor organizing. And with recent scholarship on the exponential growth of the carceral state and the Black Lives Matter Movement some intellectuals believe the movement is still ongoing. When does the Civil Rights Movement begin and end? How had it changed over time? This class takes a grassroots, regional and local, material and oral history approach to understand the movement in real time -from the perspective of activists, observers, participants, supporters, and antagonist – and from our historical vantage point. In this class, we will pay special attention to the ordinary and every person, to consider how one lives through and in the wake of movements. (In what ways are we living in the wake of the CRM right now??) Together, we will analyze oral history and letters, as well as newspapers, photographs, radio shows, films, television, and music and collaboratively conduct own oral history to gains new insights and conceptualizations of the Black Freedom Struggle and broader civil rights movement.
